On June 23, 2020, the Federal Highway Administration announced the newest designations into the Alternative Fuels Corridors program. Across the eight states in the REV West partnership (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming) five new designations of “corridor-ready” for Electric Vehicles were made, covering 164 miles of highway. An additional thirteen designations of “corridor-pending” for Electric Vehicles were made, covering over 3,200 of highway. Corridor Ready means that electric fast-charging stations can be found every 50 miles off the highway and enables States to post signage advertising the charging network along federal highways. Corridor pending means some infrastructure is in place, and the State is working towards a complete network.
These electric corridors are part of a joint effort between eight states, which formed the REV West partnership with the goal of facilitating seamless travel with electric vehicles throughout the Intermountain West. Since the eight Governors formed this partnership in 2017, over 100 new fast charging stations have been installed throughout the region. In December 2019, each Governor recommitted to this partnership and agreed upon Voluntary Minimum Standards for stations, to encourage a common charging experience throughout the region. The federal recognition of these efforts is another step towards completing electric corridors and enabling long-distance travel by electric vehicle a reality.
