The Biden Administration recently announced its plan to increase offshore wind development in the U.S. To support offshore wind deployment, the administration is establishing a new priority Wind Energy Area off the coast of New York and New Jersey. The U.S. Departments of Energy, Interior, and Commerce also announced a new goal of deploying 30 GW of offshore wind in the U.S. by 2030, which is estimated to employ 44,000 workers, power 10 million homes, and avoid 78 million metric tons of CO2 emissions. Through the National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium (NOWRDC), the Biden administration is also funding new wind research and development projects, highlighting the needed coordination between the federal government and states on advancing offshore wind research, development & deployment. The NOWRDC includes DOE investment and funds from New York, Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts, and Main. Though data collection and grant funding to improve offshore wind impacts on all stakeholders in the coastal regions, the Biden administration will further support offshore wind energy as a critical part of the coastal states’ clean energy goals.
