On June 29, 2022, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) announced $1,241,505 in grants for energy efficiency improvements in low-income congregations of various faiths throughout the state. Ten awardees will receive funds to make building improvements that reduce consumption of fossil fuels. The Climate Witness Project, a partnership between a Michigan-based nonprofit and the Christian Reformed Church of North America, will select the awardees of the Sacred Spaces Clean Energy Grants and will provide assistance in completing applications and throughout the execution of the project. The grants address the need to reduce emissions and the disproportional impact of climate change on low-income neighborhoods and the barriers to accessing energy efficiency improvements in low-income congregations.
