New York released fifteen safety recommendations proposed by the state’s Inter-Agency Fire Safety Working Group for battery storage facilities that are intended to apply to lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) exceeding 600 kilowatt hours (kWh). The working group was created in response to several fires at battery storage facilities in 2023. The recommendations include measures regarding emergency response planning, personnel training, and equipment requirements. Participating Inter-Agency Fire Safety Working Group agencies include the York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the New York Department of Public Service, the New York State Department of State, and industry experts. The New York State Code Council will consider the adoption of the proposed recommendations for the next iteration of the Fire Code of New York State.
