On July 18, 2024, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $52 million supporting small business projects in 39 states. The DOE Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) awards primarily focus on research and development of projects with strong commercialization potential. Projects must also support DOE's mission of addressing energy, environment, and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions. With this selection, projects covered areas such as grid resilience, electrification, cybersecurity, nuclear energy, and transportation. Funding came from six different DOE offices and the Infrastructure, Investment, and Jobs Act (IIJA). According to DOE, from 2009-2018, the SBIR and STTR programs led to previous awardees raising $8.6 billion in additional private sector funding and thousands of inventions and patent applications.
